Laboring Teachers
By Robert A. Southworth, Jr., Ed.D., President, The SchoolWorks Lab, Inc.
Labor Day is a moment for the nation to pause and honor the immense contributions of working people—the builders, dreamers, caretakers, educators, and innovators who power our democracy. It’s a day that celebrates not only labor as physical effort, but labor as purpose—the continuous effort to make a better life for our families, our communities, and our children.
Today, I want to shine a light on one of the most vital, and often undervalued, sectors of our national workforce: our teachers.
Teachers Are the Architects of Intelligence
In our theory of Versatile Intelligence and Assessment (VIA), we propose that educators are not just content deliverers—they are designers of human potential. They work at the front lines of human development, helping students navigate complex identities, discover diverse intelligences, and build pathways into the future. Their labor is not limited to instruction—it includes caregiving, cultural translation, trauma support, curriculum creation, and daily acts of leadership.
If Labor Day is about honoring the contributions of workers, we must elevate teachers as essential laborers of the mind and spirit.
Pathfinder: A Tool to Respect and Restore Teacher Labor
Through our work with Pathfinder Assessments, we are building a platform that amplifies teacher voice, supports individualized learning, and reduces unnecessary workload. Pathfinder isn’t just another ed-tech solution. It’s built on the foundational belief that teachers need diagnostic tools that work with what they already teach, rather than forcing them to overhaul their practice.
Pathfinder enables educators to:
- Generate assessments aligned with their curriculum.
- Track student learning through multiple intelligences.
- Gather real-time evidence of growth across cognitive, emotional, and creative domains.
- Reduce time spent on grading while improving actionable feedback.
Labor Day, VIA, and the Equity Imperative
Labor Day also calls us to look at the equity of labor. Who is supported in their work? Who is burned out? Who is left behind by outdated systems?
VIA demands that we see intelligence as diverse, systemic, and dynamic. That means honoring every child’s learning path, every teacher’s creative approach, and every community’s values. Pathfinder supports this vision by making visible the evidence of student learning, not just standardized scores.
As we begin this new school year, let Labor Day remind us of our commitment to invest in the workers of today who are preparing the citizens of tomorrow. Let us build a better system where teachers are empowered, students are seen, and labor is dignified.
Because teaching is labor. Learning is labor. And democracy depends on both.
