This is a workshop about an experiment to promote creativity in disadvantaged students in a new K-3 school in Florida, USA. Participants will learn about the arts integrated curriculum and the way we measured the creative mindset of students through a performance task assessment. Participants will have a chance to review our rubric, see our results, and ask questions about how we designed the work. Measuring Creative Mindset in Four Sub-Categories Participants will review our performance task assessment of the student’s creative mindset which has four sub-categories: confidence, problem-solving, originality, and elaboration. Pre-, Mid-, and Post- Performance Assessment The purpose of this performance assessment was to use this rubric at the beginning, middle, and end of six months of arts integrated reading and writing instructional activities. As the school is new, it used the rubric over several months in a pilot to better understand the usefulness of measuring creative mindsets of students. Take Away—Valuing Creativity Kaufman and Sternberg (2019) stress that valuing creativity helps to promote creativity. The push for increased accuracy should not only help students become more confident because we value creativity, but it should also lead to increased engagement and achievement with any subjects that are integrated with our creative tasks.

About the Summit

The purpose of the summit is to bring together arts education professionals worldwide to share the latest research, thought, and practice in arts education assessment and evaluation. We invite primary and secondary school arts educators, higher education professionals, arts education researchers and policymakers, national, state and local education officials from across the world to join us online on October 11-15, 2021.

The impact of the arts and arts education is wide and significant. As a global arts education community, we seek to know the impact of our work in the many contexts in which it manifests. Assessment and evaluation of the impact of arts learning and arts programming involves complex and valuable processes that are shaped by the contexts in which arts education takes place. From design to implementation to analysis, unveiling the impact of our work is achieved in multiple ways – through various designs, models, and practices.

We seek to bring together artist-educators and advocates from across the world to network, share research, and examine quality structures, processes, and practices. Artist-educators and arts program directors strive to ensure that arts assessment and program evaluation is intentional, well designed, and yields quality information that is analyzed and translated effectively into practices that improve arts learning and impact on students, audiences, and communities. This summit will bring together a host of international experts to share and discuss evidence-based practices aimed at measuring impact of arts learning and arts programming. We invite proposals that address consequences of assessment and evaluation during the 2020-21 when the world was faced with the challenges brought on by the novel coronavirus SARS-19.

Conference sessions focus on student assessment or arts program evaluation, in one of three tracks:

  • Designing for quality
  • Implementing with fidelity
  • Methodologies and data analysis

During the 2020 Virtual Seminar, emerging themes were identified as pressing for the field of arts education in response to the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic and related societal responses. Sessions will expand the current discourse on the following topics:

  • Decolonizing Assessment in Arts and Cultural Education
  • Assessment and Evaluation in Virtual Environments
  • Futures of Teacher Training in Assessment Literacy

Philosophical Foundations

This Summit is grounded in the following shared beliefs:

  1. All students are inherently artistic. Every person has the capability to experience, learn, and engage with the arts meaningfully.
  2. Assessment and evaluation of arts learning is best when it is ongoing and not episodic. Arts learning progresses over time, and the assessment and evaluation of that learning is a continuous process.
  3. The multidimensional nature of the arts creates opportunities and challenges for designing evidence-based measures. The arts are a complex, multidimensional human experience. The design of assessment and evaluation models must reflect those characteristics.


At this Summit, we seek to:

  • Further the WAAE objectives of advocacy, research, and collaboration.
  • Develop a set of international principles for arts assessment.
  • Develop an online, open access publication of selected summit papers through the University of Florida libraries. This will be a one-time publication to serve as an historical record of the event.

Participants will:

  • Discuss and develop a set of international principles for arts assessment.
  • Engage with the international arts education community to identify arts assessment and evaluation practice that are shared across disciplines.
  • Deliberate with presenters and attendees about values and beliefs on evidence-based arts assessment and evaluation.
  • Dialogue with WAAE leaders about the organization’s objectives of advocacy, research, and collaboration, and connect this summit to the support of the broad goals Seoul Agenda and the UNESCO sustainability goals.


Registration fees for WAAE 2021 World Summit are scaled to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI), If you are unsure of your country’s placement on the Index, please see the list linked in item 1.

 The registration process for WAAE 2021 is easy. Here are the steps:

  1. Determine your country’s level (very high, high, medium, or low) on the Human Development Report 2020.
  2. Go to the registration site, select your registration fee level, and follow the instructions to pay.
  3. One month prior to the event (on or around September 13), the event micro-site will launch and login credentials will be sent to registered attendees upon registration.

As recognition for their contributions to the conference program, conference organizers have instituted a discounted registration fee for those presenting. 

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made by October 1, 2021 will receive a full refund, cancellations between October 1, 2021 and October 15, 2021 will receive a 75% refund. No refunds will be processed October 16 or later. Cancellations must be submitted in writing to
