LEarning Evidence
Seeing Learning as It Develops
Learning leaves evidence. The hard part is knowing where to look. For generations, schools have leaned on tests and grades to tell us what students know. Those measures have their place, but they’re snapshots, and a snapshot can’t show how understanding grows.
That growth shows up over time: in the questions a student asks, the mistakes they make and then fix, the way they explain an idea in their own words, and the moment they use what they know in a situation they’ve never seen before. It’s in their revisions, connections, strategies, and conversations, too.
At The SchoolWorks Lab, we’re asking a different question:
What if we could understand learning by studying the evidence it leaves behind as it develops?
A new kind of test won’t answer that. We have to rethink what we mean by intelligence and evidence, how much weight we give teachers’ professional judgment, what role technology should play, and how teaching and learning relate to each other. That’s the work we’ve taken on.
